Hurricane Katrina


On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the Gulf Coast. Katrina stretched over 400 miles across and was rated a category 3 hurricane with winds of 100 to 140 miles per hour. Katrina made landfall in Louisiana as a category 4 hurricane with winds in excess of 170 miles per hour. The aftermath of Katrina was catastrophic; the hurricane caused over $100 billion in damage and hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes. Katrina was ranked as the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
